Animals that are Herbivorous

A herbivore is classified as an animal that primarily feeds on plant matter. The animals that do so require several adaptations that allow them to consume plants, as flora has outer cell walls that make them harder to break down.

Herbivores have broad molars that can grind the plants into easily consumable pieces. Several of them are also ruminants, i.e., their stomachs have more than one chamber. The plant matter softens in the first chamber, where the specialized bacteria break them down. This partially digested food or cud is regurgitated and chewed again, and swallowed. The cud is then sent into the third and fourth chambers, which are finally wholly digested.
