Birds of Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is the sixth most populous state in the United States of America, with most of the population concentrated in the eastern and western parts. The central part mostly has farmlands, forests, and mountainous terrains, thus being more prominent as a birding hotspot. Besides this, the Pennsylvania side of Lake Erie in the northwestern corner of the state has a 43-mile shoreline, being a favorite spot attracting many water and migratory birds.

The Pennsylvania Ornithological Records Committee accepts around 450 bird species living in the state.

The ruffled grouse has been designated as Pennsylvania’s official state bird since 1931.
