Birds of Grenada

The Caribbean nation of Grenada is home to around 200 birds. Most of these were vagrants or were introduced by accident. However, due to the country’s tropical climate, these birds have made it their home.

Grenada’s national bird is the appropriately named endemic species, the Grenada Dove. Other notable avifauna include the Antillean Crested Hummingbird, the Caribbean Coot, and the Green-throated Carib.

Some of the best places to go birdwatching in Grenada include Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve, La Sagesse Nature Center, and Mt. Hartman Dove Sanctuary. The peak birding season occurs in winter, from December to April. This period coincides with the migration of many North American bird species to the Caribbean, including Grenada. The cooler, drier weather during this time also makes it more comfortable for birdwatching.
