Lizards in Illinois

As a result of Illinois’ cold frigid winters, there are only six native lizard species. Two species were introduced – the Mediterranean gecko and the eastern collared lizard – and have adapted to the cold climate. The eastern collared lizard is limited only to the southern part of Illinois and, as such, is not considered an invasive species anymore.
